Outnumbered Union soldiers set fire to the armory as Virginia militia advanced. Residents put out the fires in time to save most of the weapon-making machinery, which the Confederates shipped by rail to Winchester and on to Richmond. The machinery became the foundation of Confederate arms manufacturing, and the Mississippi rifle equipment went to the Fayetteville Arsenal.
