Judging Harpers Ferry indefensible, Joseph E. Johnston abandoned the post and his forces destroyed the 800-foot combined highway and railroad bridge across the Potomac. Confederates had already been burning B&O bridges and track along the Virginia portion of the line since late May. By the end of 1861, 23 B&O bridges had been burned and 36.5 miles of track torn up.
