Bridges on the Baltimore and Ohio near Farmington were burned in late May. McClellan ordered Col. Benjamin F. Kelley's 1st West Virginia Infantry to advance from Wheeling and safeguard the railroad bridge over the Monongahela River at Fairmont, while Ohio troops moved on Parkersburg and Grafton. By May 28 about 3,000 Union troops were in western Virginia, and the advance led to the fight at Philippi on June 3.
