GRAFTON JUNCTION
Junction of the Baltimore and Ohio and the Northwestern Virginia railroads, and an early target for both sides. Confederates held it for three days from May 25, 1861. Benjamin Franklin Kelley then stationed his Railroad Division there, and the railroad kept its yard and machine shops there.
Then
Grafton was the junction of the Baltimore and Ohio and the Northwestern Virginia railroads, which made it an early target for both sides. Confederates held it for three days from May 25, 1861, and after Union troops drove them from Philippi on June 3, Benjamin Franklin Kelley stationed his Railroad Division at Grafton. The Northwestern Virginia Railroad kept its rail yard and machine shops there.
Confederate raiders struck the lines often. The Jones-Imboden Raid of April 1863 destroyed the three-span Monongahela bridge at Fairmont but did not attack the Grafton yards, which Mulligan's Brigade, the First and Eighth Maryland and Miner's Indiana battery guarded.
Now
Lines owned by CSX and smaller railroads run through Grafton today.
