Jones ordered the Cheat River bridge burned "at all hazard"; Lee said destroying it would be "worth to me an army." About 250 Union soldiers and armed townsmen drove off the attack, keeping the Cheat River and Tray Run bridges whose loss would have halted traffic to the Ohio River. By April 29 Jones had still burned nine other railroad bridges and captured two trains.
