Then

The Orange and Alexandria met the Virginia Central at Gordonsville, and supplies from south of the James reached the army at Manassas in 1861 over the two lines. From March 1862 the Exchange Hotel beside the junction was part of the Gordonsville Receiving Hospital, which treated more than 70,000 men by trainloads from nearby battlefields.

Union raids destroyed most Virginia Central depots but not the one at Gordonsville. Sheridan's 1864 raid toward Gordonsville was stopped at Trevilian Station, and the town came through the war largely unscathed.
