Then

Richmond was the terminus of five railroads and its warehouses became the supply and logistical center for much of the Confederate forces in the Eastern Theater. Smaller factories in the city made tents, uniforms, harnesses, leather goods, swords and bayonets.

In April 1865 retreating troops were ordered to burn bridges and supply warehouses, and blew up the powder magazine at the Shockoe Hill Burying Ground. The fire spread out of control and destroyed much of central Richmond; the Gallego Flour Mills ruins became an iconic photograph of the burned city.
