CONFEDERATE NAVY YARD
Confederate Navy shipyard at Rocketts on the James, 1862-1865, after the loss of the Portsmouth yard. Serviced and built vessels for the James River Squadron, among them the ironclads CSS Fredericksburg, CSS Richmond and CSS Texas. Partly burned by retreating Confederate troops when Richmond fell on April 3, 1865.
Then
After the loss of the Portsmouth yard in May 1862, Rocketts became one of two Confederate Navy shipyards at Richmond, with works on both banks of the James. It serviced and built vessels for the James River Squadron, among them the casemate ironclads CSS Fredericksburg, CSS Richmond and CSS Texas.
The yard stopped work and was partly burned by retreating Confederate troops when Richmond fell on April 3, 1865. Lincoln came ashore at Rocketts Landing the next day.
Now
Built over
Rocketts Landing is now a new urbanist neighborhood of brick streets, built on a former factory site, served by a GRTC Pulse station.
Track in service today runs beside the site, on a line owned by CSX.
