McClellan's army gathered at the station on the Richmond and York River Railroad before crossing White Oak Swamp, and troops were ordered to burn anything they could not carry. Magruder pursued along the railroad with the first armored railroad battery used in combat, a 32-pounder Brooke rifle behind railroad iron pushed by a locomotive. The railroad was wrecked during the campaign and abandoned for several years.
