Confederate supply base at the junction of the Orange and Alexandria and the Manassas Gap railroads, 1861-1862. Shenandoah Valley beef came over the Manassas Gap, called the Meat Line of the Confederacy. The Confederates abandoned the line in early March 1862, and the Union army repaired it.

Then

The Confederate defense line in northern Virginia was set at the junction of the Orange and Alexandria and the Manassas Gap railroads. The Manassas Gap carried so much Shenandoah Valley beef to the army there that it was called the Meat Line of the Confederacy, and a military railroad was built from Manassas to the Centreville winter camps in 1861-62.

The Confederates abandoned the Manassas line in early March 1862 and the Centreville railroad with it. The Union army repaired the line, and Manassas Junction was in Union hands for most of the war.

Now
