Then
In August 1862 John Pope's Army of Virginia kept its huge supply depot at Manassas Junction on the Orange and Alexandria Railroad, its line of supply and communication back to Washington.
Isaac Trimble's brigade and Stuart's cavalry overran the small garrison before daybreak on August 27, 1862, taking more than 300 prisoners and eight cannons for a loss of four men. Jackson let his soldiers carry off what they could and burned the rest of the supplies at midnight, and the loss forced Pope into an abrupt retreat from the Rappahannock.
Now
Lines owned by Norfolk Southern and smaller railroads run through Manassas today.
