Shore batteries from Aquia Creek to Freestone Point blockaded the Potomac below Washington from October 1861 to March 1862. The Navy forbade civilian traffic on the river while the guns were in place, even after finding they could not hit passing ships. The Confederates abandoned the batteries in early March 1862, as McClellan moved against them.
