Then

Northern terminus of the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac Railroad and a Potomac River port. Haupt's Construction Corps rebuilt about 1,000 feet of wharf and the line to Fredericksburg, and from November 1862 rail cars loaded at Alexandria arrived on barges and ran on to Falmouth without breaking bulk.

Burnside's troops wrecked the landing and its rail link in 1862 to deny it to the Confederates. The Union rebuilt both for the Fredericksburg campaign.
