Retreating Confederates destroyed the bridge, the only rail link between the Potomac River and Fredericksburg, along with 13 miles of line from Aquia Creek to Falmouth. Haupt, appointed chief of military railroads on April 27, had infantrymen cut two million feet of lumber and build a bridge 400 feet long and 100 feet high. Lincoln saw loaded trains crossing it on May 28.
