On May 23 Jackson took the Union garrison at Front Royal while Ashby's cavalry cut the telegraph and the railroad between Front Royal and Strasburg; retreating Union troops burned some of their supplies. Banks fell back down the Valley Pike from Strasburg, and Jackson's men attacked his columns and captured so many wagons and stores that they nicknamed him "Commissary Banks".
